A Molotov, but no cocktail

Monday, Apr 23, 1945

As world leaders gather for a major world security conference in San Francisco, the Dumbarton Oaks agreement is in big trouble. President Truman is not happy that Russia just announced a 20-year treaty with the soviet-sponsored Polish regime. He’s preparing to let Soviet Foreign Molotov know that he won’t support that treaty. When he became president, he was told Stalin would compromise and allow non-soviets to be included in the delegation to San Francisco. Now Stalin has done an about-face; he claims his generals insist and he has no choice. As if! The key for the USA is that we’ve pretty much destroyed the Japanese fleet and Truman doesn’t deed Stalin’s help defeat Japan.
