Happy meat eaters

Monday, Apr 9, 1945

Mmmm, meat! After we cleaned up from gardening yesterday, we drove to Lowry Field for a dinner with real meat. Mommy wrote, “We had steak and roast beef which I cannot afford on my rations now that everything requires points.” She’s counting on the garden to keep us fed and maybe an occasional chicken when Daddy finds it at the PX. The Field is a huge Air Force base named for 2nd Lt Francis Lowry, the only Colorado pilot killed in WWI combat. There was a lot of talk about the latest advances in Germany – our guns are pounding Bremen as the Nazis rush in troops to try to stop Patton. The Reds are now 3 miles inside Vienna. Germany is caught in a vise.
