Jack Benny meets Phil Harris

Sunday, Feb. 4, 1945

MacArthur is nearing Manila. And an Associated Press listening point picked up the German DNB news agency announcing “Schluss, Schluss” – “The end, the end” – in the middle of a regular broadcast. Russians state outright that panic is spreading in Germany as government agencies flee from Berlin to Munich. People even report anti-Hitler posters appearing in Germany. It was hard not to celebrate as cozied up to the fire, The Denver Post in hand and Jack Benny on the radio. But so far I have not heard the fat lady sing.
