Germans in flight: Operation Hannibal

ms-wilhelm-gustloffWednesday, Jan 24, 1945

With the Red Army approaching, German troops and civilians are fleeing East Europe as fast as they can. General Ivan Chernyakhovsky and Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky have cut off East Prussia so German ships – everything from merchant ships to fishing boats – have begun evacuations from unoccupied ports in Poland. With the biggest naval evacuation since Dunkirk, the war seems to be reversing itself. Germans are fleeing from the countries they occupied and devastated. Yet somehow, despite the crushing defeats he’s experiencing, Hitler continues to insist that the war go on and that Germany will win.
