“By us, it’s the hard way”

Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1944

Mommy wrote a short note laying out what she considers the best possible option: “If you get any kind of a permanent job here, we’ll plan to set up a home again. Meanwhile I’ll pay for the storage for three more months and a year on the insurance because I think it sticks wherever the furniture is. If it isn’t one thing it’s another.” You can almost hear her sigh when she added, “But things don’t happen to us according to Hoyle. By us, it’s the hard way.”
