Mamma Mia!

Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1944

The war isn’t over yet but we’re already falling out with our friends. The British are fuming la-repubblicaat our pronouncement that Italy was free to form its own new government without Allied participation. Ivanoe Bonomi, a dedicted anti-Fascist, is leading the transition but the British are worried about the Communists and other Left parties gaining control and shifting the past-war balance of power in Europe. Mommy says you can’t blame the British: They just battled Leftist mobs trying to free their compatriots from a jail in Athens. The future of Communism was always an issue when we accepted Stalin as an ally. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
