Who is Noel Coward and why is everyone in Brooklyn furious with him? All my aunts and uncles are fuming and saying stores should refuse to sell his books. Mommy says that Mr. Coward made a pretty nasty comment about Brooklyn men in his book Middle East Diary: “”I talked with tough men from Texas and Arizona. They were magnificent specimens. But, I was less impressed by the mournful little Brooklyn boys ‘tears amid the alien corn’ with nothing worse than a bullet wound in a leg or a fractured arm.” A Brooklyn-born and -bred soldier responded: “Tears, nothing! Who the hell does this Coward think he is, anyhow?” That’s telling him. Daddy is a Brooklyn man and he’s no coward!
