Noel Coward Takes On Brooklyn

Monday, Dec. 4, 1944

Who is Noel Coward and why is everyone in Brooklyn furious with him? All my aunts and noel-cowarduncles are fuming and saying stores should refuse to sell his books. Mommy says that Mr. Coward made a pretty nasty comment about Brooklyn men in his book Middle East Diary: “”I talked with tough men from Texas and Arizona. They were magnificent specimens. But, I was less impressed by the mournful little Brooklyn boys ‘tears amid the alien corn’ with nothing worse than a bullet wound in a leg or a fractured arm.” A Brooklyn-born and -bred soldier responded: “Tears, nothing! Who the hell does this Coward think he is, anyhow?” That’s telling him. Daddy is a Brooklyn man and he’s no coward!
