Kamikaze Strike on USS Intrepid

Saturday, Nov. 25, 1944

Today a Kamikaze pilot crashed in the USS Intrepid. The Pacific is probably where Daddy will be sent since the war is nowhere near over there. Mommy just got off the phone with Grandma and Grandpa. We’ll have dinner with some of friends from Daddy’s days at the VA here. Then we’ll board the train at Union Station and reach Connecticut late tomorrow morning. Daddy splurged on a Pullman berth for us. He feels torn that he can’t drive us but we won’t get leave until next month and he has to go out on a bivouac. He says that’s “like a picnic but it’s not a picnic.”
