If the GOP wins…

Tuesday, Oct. 31, 1944

Not one, not two, but three letters from Grandma and Grandpa came today! Mostly, Grandpa wrote words of comfort to Mommy about the election. They are both ardent supporters of FDR and fearful that Dewey might win. If the GOP does win, that will release the likes of Father Coughlin, a populist, a racist, and an Anti-Semite. Yet Grandpa is optimistic: “The odds are against them. But even if they win, I am sure that if evil forces being concentrated …smaller or bigger arise [and] can establish a ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’ justice for a period, there are enuf influential sane people with enuf crusading spirit to offset a national relapse.”
