“….inadequate thanks”

The first army has cut off Nazi escape routes around Aachen and is battling on the city’s outskirts. But Mommy is concerned about the Pacific. Writing home about her cousin today, she asked: “What do you mean he ‘has gone down on Saipan’? Is he wounded or missing? I never knew him well but if he has done it for us, he has our inadequate thanks for his sacrifice.”
