Daddy wasn’t kidding! Today the papers carried a directive issued in August by Heinrich Himmler that senior German officers should save their own lives so that they can start preparing WW 3. His directive states: “The German officer is too valuable to be sacrificed, especially in a hopeless situation. That he should save himself by withdrawing is in the interest of the country” Commenting on losses in WWI and pending in WWII, he added, “Our complete victory seemed, until recently, so assured that we can prepare again with bhigh spirits and in good heart for a further struggle. In order to prepare from the technical point of view for this third, unavoidable trial of strength for the leadership of the world we have need of our officers.” Himmler has also ordered Junior Officers to “die a hero’s death.” So maybe the German withdrawal from Calais isn’t really good news after all. In other news, Mickey Rooney got married – his second time – to Miss Birmingham of 1944. They met when Pvt Rooney was stationed in Alabama.
