Wishing for peace in the New Year

Sunday, Sept. 17, 1944

Operation Market Garden was launched in Europe to boot the Nazis from The Netherlands and Belgium. A hopeful omen for the Jewish High Holy Days that begin tonight at sundown. Mommy will put out slices of apple and honey. Daddy will say a special blessing over the wine and Mommy’s homebaked challah bread. Cozy and well-fed as we are, they’ll be thinking about Jews in Europe dying in Nazi death camps and of the soldiers racing to free them. As the prayer goes:

May it be Your will that we be inscribed into the Book of Life and that the coming year be one of peace and tranquility.

May our homes reflect the sense of Your holiness and may we strive to fulfill Your will for us.

We pray that our lives become sanctified by Your guidance and by Your love for Your people.
