Guam “Turkey Shoot” Over!

Thursday, Aug 10, 1944

In the midst of summer heat and doldrums, electrifying news: We’ve taken Guam! It’s been a long tough fight going back to June 19. Guam is a key link in the Mariana Island chain. The battle was called a “turkey shoot” when one pilot commented after a raid: “Why, hell, it was just like an old-time turkey shoot down home!” That’s because it was so easy for our bombers, with the help of the Fifth Fleet, to take down Japanese aircraft as they pounded first one island then another. As we inch closer to Japan, my family sees the sense of Daddy’s course in tropical medicine.
