“Looking for an out”

Tuesday, July 25, 19441944_Brooklyn Daily Eagle_p.6_July 25

Brooklyn is so different from Connecticut. I don’t have other children to play with at Mommy’s house but I do have a dog, a huge wrap-around porch, and a big backyard. There isn’t much of a yard in Brooklyn but I have lots of cousins. Also, I can look at Daddy’s photo albums and listen to stories of his adventures. Tomorrow he’s going to tell us how he and some friends got lost in Palestine trying to hike to the Dead Sea. Not much talk of politics here. This is solid Roosevelt territory. But here’s breaking news: Sixteen captured German generals have called on fellow officers still in action to break with Hitler and surrender. “Don’t wait until Hitler brings you to disaster,” they proclaimed. “To fight Hitler is to fight for Germany.”
