“the ominous curtain of silence”

Saturday, July 22, 1944

Something has happened in Germany but no one knows what. “Behind the ominous curtain of silence – the most terrible blood purge in German history is believed to be underway today,” reports the United Press. German Field Marhsalls von Rundstedt and von Brauchitsch have been executed. Sailors are mutinying at Keil and Stellin. “The political situation inside Germany remains obscure and confusing” say Swiss sources. The Gestapo is even rounding up officers and patrolling the streets. The official radio reports that everything is under control but events say otherwise. We are watchful and hopeful that the German citizens themselves will topple Hitler.
