Democratic deadlock

Friday, July 21, 1944

Admiral Nimitz reported today that Marines began landing on Guam early yesterday after 17 full days of bombardment. The British are pushing toward Paris and the Russians are moving west along a broad front. Back in Chicago, Democrats are floating some dark horse candidates for vice president: today it’s Senate Majority Leader Barkley of Kentucky and yesterday it was Senator Bankhead of Alabama. But enough of war and politics. Grandma is boiling a chicken and roasting some potatoes. Grandpa is washing up and putting on his skullcap. It’s a late summer Friday but sundown as the Sabbath peace descends. And best of all: Daddy will be here by Sunday.

Light the Sabbath candles.
