Should soldiers vote for president?

Wednesday, July 12 1944

1944_Naugatuck_July 12_p.4Big news: Roosevelt is willing to run for a fourth term if the Democrats nominate him. The Republicans are having conniptions – and so are some Democrats. Nothing like this has ever happened before. A problem that has resurfaced, though, is what to do about soldiers. Everyone assumes they’ll vote for the commander-in-chief. So naturally the Democrats want to make sure every soldier gets a chance to vote while the Republicans resist the idea. This is a reversal from the Civil War when Republicans were keen to let soldiers vote for their candidate, Abraham Lincoln, while the Democrats resisted.
