The toll of war

1944 WR Hosp woundedMy father came home somber today from Walter Reed Hospital. The doctor who’ll be teaching his course in tropical medicine took him through wards filled with soldiers evacuated from Normandy. My father says surgeons are doing amazing things to save limbs and lives. But the human cost of the fighting is staggering. These are all eager young men, he says, so cheerful – at least on the surface. The Veterans Administration is doing its best despite the huge number of them.

Light the Sabbath candles and hope for peace.
