Takoma Park – “Sylvan suburb”

takoma parkSaturday, June 24, 1944

What a stroke of luck after motels and having to sleep in dresser drawers. Takoma Park is really nice. We’ve got a nice little house with a nice little yard, just as my parents hoped. The city barely 100 years old. It was established in 1838. The founder. Benjamin Franklin Gilbert, had the wisdom to pick some high ground – well above the swamp that was still Washington DC. He wanted to create a “sylvan suburb of the Nation’s Capitol.” It worked. I’ll be in the leafy backyard in my playpen while my parents unpack.
