My mother’s apology to Pope Pius XII

Wednesday, June 14, 1944

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 2.11.07 PM“I have to withdraw all my complaints against the Pope and his Vatican. Did I tell you that Abe learned from an Italian Jewish doctor that the Vatican had a foolproof organization for getting Jews and their families out of Italy when the Germans ran it? They even arranged to get out vast sums of money which is no mean accomplishment when you consider that all the Jewish fortunes were registered. I hereby apologize to His Holiness and take back all the nasty things I said about him.” My mother isn’t one to hold a grudge, as she made clear in this letter to her father. Facts are facts.

PS. Glad she’s typing now!
