16 to 1 shot wins Belmont Stakes

Bounding Home_1944Saturday, June 3, 1944

Everyone was shouting and whooping this afternoon. At first, my mother thought it was a baseball game or the Belmont Stakes. But, no: “We’re finally invading Europe!” a neighbor yelled. “It’s D Day!” People ran out of their homes and hugged each other. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the shouting died down. A radio announcement stated that the earlier report was wrong. There was no invasion – yet. As for the Belmont Stakes, long shot Bounding Home beat out Pensive.
