Good news from India, bad news from Crimea

Wednesday, May 31, 1944

The war in India is over. Japanese have retreated from Imphal, their last outpost. The fighting raged there for years and was vicious to the last. The news is making us shift our focus East, to the Pacific front. At the same time, disturbing information is filtering out that the Soviet Union has began expelling more than 200,000 Tartars from Crimea. They are accused of collaborating with the Germans. Joseph Stalin has deported some 250,000 Tatars from Crimea to Uzbekistan. A lot of people felt uneasy about our alliance with Uncle Joe. Now they have good reason.
