Three Cheers for the Memphis Belle!

Monday March 7, 1944

My father put the album away last night. It’s back to the world of 1944. The Allied air war over Berlin has destroyed 176 fighters. Nelson King was one lucky flier! His Flying Fortress was attacked by German planes and shot up so bad, he said it was like a “flying sieve,” according to today’s Brooklyn Daily Eagle. But he made it back over the channel and belly flopped on a landing strip in England. According to the paper, the bombing is really taking its toll on German morale. Women are supposedly pressing for peace. Three cheers for the Memphis Belle! Which will come first, the war ending or the Army calling up my father?
