1932 Bike trip to Paris

Thursday Feb 24, 1944

DiptychIn 1932 my father and his friends took a long bike trip to Paris from Cologne, where he had transferred for his studies. One bike broke down along the way but they repaired it and continued. As they biked through small towns, they saved money by drinking at horse troughs such as this one on the right. In his photo album, my father wrote: “Is it true that Frenchmen don’t drink water? We can’t say. But judging from the water the horses drink, and the wine the Frenchmen drink, horse sense is a wonderful thing!”
