The GOP presidential primary: Hot politics in a cold month

While my father waits for Army orders, the Allies have launched a new offensive in Italy. The Russians are gaining ground. But the Home Front is convulsed now by presidential primaries. The Republicans are apoplectic that Franklin D Roosevelt may run for an unprecedented fourth term. But old guard Republicans are also alarmed that Wendell Wilkie may win the Republican nomination. His 1940 campaign against Roosevelt’s New Deal was a failure. Yet he became one of FDR’s allies for the Lend Lease Act that provided war materiel to Britain. He was an ardent anti-Nazi whose book “One World” advocated for international peacekeeping after the war. His liberal left-leaning views were now anathema to the GOP. And
