The Germans Sue for Peace? Not!

Monday, Nov. 29, 1943

Good news for my parents! Good news for all parents! The Eighth Army has burst through the Nazi line on the Adriatic while Russians have cut Nazi lines on their western front. Whatever Americans think of Communism – and they mostly don’t like it at all – they are glad at this moment to have such allies. The Russians are driving now into the Nazi heartland. And rumor has it that Franz Von Papen, Nazi Ambassador to Turkey, is suing for peace. By some reports, he has visited the Vatican and might even join a meeting with Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin. Could this spare men like my father from overseas duty?
