If you’ve been watching BBC’s “Home Fires,” about the Womens Institute during WWII, you’ll remember the thrilling scene that ended the first season: Hearing thunderous noise, the WI members rush out of a meeting and look up. There, crossing the skies and headed toward Germany, they see an RAF  planes. an armada of them! By 1943, with American production at full blast, more than 700 planes in one night could make a recent bombing raid over Berlin. Today, also witnessed the worst naval disaster in the war: German bombers sank the troopship Rohna carrying over 2,000 troops. More than 1,000 were lost at sea.
