When can you hire a baby minder?

As a new mother, Lois was still anxious about every aspect of child-rearing. “Another thing,” she wrote to her mother, “how soon do you leave a baby with a baby-minder to go to the movies? There are some high school girls around here who stay with children for 50 cents an evening.” Note the going rate: 50 cents an evening, not even an hour! One movie Lois and Abe might have had in mind was “Heaven Can Wait” – the original 1943 movie, not the later remake. As critic John Landis explains, they probably had no idea with that story was really about!
