“Cook Like It’s 1943” Week – Day One

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1943Sept. 22, 1943_p.10

It’s time to plan the week’s menus so get out your ration book, a pencil, and a notepad. Fall produce is abundant and you’ll save on ration points if you can harvest anything in your Victory Garden. Tonight you’ll be serving baked stuffed green peppers with corn on the cob. Add some hot dogs (1 lb will require 6 red points but won’t need them all). You’ll also need some bacon (3/4 lb for 2 red points). Be grateful for America’s abundance. It could be worse – so much worse. There is a famine in Bengal. In Naples, the Nazis have looted, burned, and killed thousands as they’ve retreated. Is Greece next?
