The beginning of the end!

“Eisenhower Strikes!” blared the headline. It was the beginning of the end – although no one knew just how long the end would eventually last. Today, the invasion of Italy began as the Allies established a beachhead on the European mainland. A sense of euphoria swept America. And no wonder: U-Boat were no longer destroying so many American ships, the Allies were making progress in the Pacific and the Russians were still hanging against the new Nazi weapons. This cartoon captures the sense of imminent victory.
