To Mother – The Bravest Soldier of Them All

Sunday, May 9, 1943

Screen Shot 2015-05-06 at 2.55.04 PMAs Mother’s Day dawned, images of victory began reaching the Home Front from American soldiers in North Africa tossed wisecracks at passing truckloads of Italian prisoners-of-war. But the wisecracks stopped when one Italian who spoke English cracked back,”What’re you laughing for? We’re going to New York and you’re going to Italy.” Prophetic words, those, as the victory in North Africa paved the way now for the invasion of Europe. Coming up through the toe of Italy would be a logical route. The jubilant crowds of French greeting the Yanks certainly expected that invasion to free their compatriots in Europe any day now. Enjoy this Pathe newsreel. Of course, it credits the British military but Yanks were critical members of the team.
