Lois received a letter from home with more ideas about determining the sex of her baby. Her father wrote: “Your Daniel – and Daniel it is – because according to mother’s explanation males are the chronic kickers, ladies behave…and for all probabilities Daniel may be under [the] impression that all fellows ought to kick like that in jubilation when a different feeling or understanding spasmodically runs thru the body or new flavor in food.”

Her father ended somewhat wistfully: “It’s nice of you to hurry in coming as early as you can. In fact, Mother and I were harboring the idea in[the] form of a suggestion that you might be able to come in a week in advance. Mother has plenty of visitors and is almost over the pain. She is going to sit up today. Lovingly, Yours, Pa”
