Valentine’s Day was inseparable this year from the war. The US expected to draft some 12,000 young men a day. A day! Some were married, many weren’t. Young couples who barely knew each other got married as shipment overseas loomed. Children would be born who wouldn’t see their fathers for months, years – maybe never. It’s too late now if you forgot to buy flowers and candy for your girl. Stores everywhere were closed on Sunday. 24/7 commerce was still in the future. On-line purchases with overnight delivery? Not even dreamed of! But love and marriage always make a great story, as in the Pond’s ad.
