Monday, Feb. 1, 1943

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 1.37.41 PMEvery day brought news of the war’s the ups and downs. In a reversal of previous successes, Nazi forces smashed through French lines in North Africa. And U-Boats continued to harry Allied convoys. Meanwhile, General Hanford MacNider, commander of American forces in the Philippines, said that jungle warfare was “like fighting in an old mattress” although he assured the public that “Yanks are learning.”

But don’t forget that Valentine’s Day is only two weeks away!
